Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
What is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)is a mental disorder that is characterized by recurrent and persistent urge or thought (obsessions) that causes the individual significant anxiety or distress. As the individual tries to suppress unwanted thoughts or reduce anxiety, he/she repeatedly performs an activity (Compulsions)that can be time consuming and significantly affects the individual’s normal functioning and quality of life.
Symptoms of OCD
- Repetitive behaviors such as cleaning, hand washing, checking doors, prying, counting that the individual feels obligated or driven to perform to reduce anxiety.
- To diagnose OCD, your symptoms should affect your daily function, consume at least an hour of your day, and significantly affect your day-to-day activities.
- Obsessions or compulsions may affect your ability to pay attention at school or complete tasks at work.
- They could even keep you from going to school, work, or anywhere else.
